Coconut oil is derived from the coconut palm tree (botanical species Cocos nucifera) and is native to the South Pacific. It is believed that the Polynesian people propagated the plant in the region more than 3,000 years ago. The plant has since spread to other tropical areas across the globe and has been used by many peoples for building construction, nutrition, and cosmetic purposes. Today, coconut oil is used all over the globe as a moisturizer in cosmetics such as body lotions, shaving creams, hand soaps, hair conditioners, and hair treatments. In fact, coconut oil is found in more than 500 commonly available cosmetics in the U.S. alone. Coconut oil is also used to keep skin moist while medications are applied for eczema and psoriasis.Coconut oil has benefits in human nutrition b cause it contains lauric acid, caprylic acid, and capric acid, three medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs) that are metabolized quickly, and provide a fast source of energy. And fortunately, MCTs are not stored as fat in the body. Coconut oil can also be utilized for baking, cooking, or as a replacement for other spreadable fats such as butter or margarine. It’s often preferred over these products due to its quick metabolism, and the fact that MCTs fatty acids are not stored as body fat.
