In-House Stick Pack Capabilities For Contract Manufacturing
Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
What is dietary supplement contract manufacturing?
Contract manufacturing is when a brand partners with a specialized facility, like Reliance, to produce supplements rather than building manufacturing capabilities in-house. A turnkey approach like ours consolidates every service under one roof, from formulation and ingredient sourcing through testing, manufacturing, packaging, and regulatory support, so your product moves through one coordinated team instead of a chain of separate vendors. That consolidation is what eliminates the handoffs, miscommunication, and inter-vendor shipping costs that can slow a launch and erode quality.
What's the difference between private label and contract manufacturing?
Private label is the fastest path to market: you select from our pre-formulated, pre-certified stock products and add your branding to a regulatory-compliant custom label. Minimums are lower, lead times are shorter, and the formulation work is already done. Contract manufacturing is for brands that need customization, whether that means modifying one of our stock formulations or developing an entirely new product from scratch. Minimums are higher and timelines are longer, but you get a unique product built to your exact specifications. Many brands use both: launching with stock products to enter the market quickly while developing custom signature products for differentiation. Learn more about our Private Label Program or contact us to discuss which path fits your project.
How does your project kickoff and quoting process work?
Every project starts with a discovery conversation to understand your brand, your target market, and the product you want to bring to life. From there, we'll determine whether your project is a stock product (fastest route to market), a modified stock formulation (balanced approach), or a fully custom formulation (maximum differentiation). You'll receive a detailed quote within 1 week for stock products and 2 to 3 weeks for custom projects. A signed quote, purchase order, and 50% deposit kick off the work; the balance is due before shipment. First-time custom customers requiring a physical sample also place a $2,000 R&D deposit, refunded after $50,000 in annual orders.
Pricing & Minimums
What are your contract manufacturing minimums?
Reliance offers competitive minimums that vary by product type and format. As a general guide, our supplement contract manufacturing minimums start around 250,000 to 300,000 units for tablets and capsules, and 1,000 to 2,000 kilos for powders. Specialty products may carry different thresholds. Smaller brands or those testing the market can also start with our Private Label Program, which uses pre-formulated stock products and lower MOQs. Reach out and we'll walk you through the right starting point for your project.
How much does contract manufacturing cost?
Costs depend on product complexity, ingredient profile, order quantity, packaging, and the level of customization involved. Custom formulations carry higher upfront investment than stock products because of the R&D, testing, and stability work required, but the per-unit cost typically improves at higher volumes. Reliance pricing includes 50% deposit at PO with the balance due before shipment, plus a $2,000 R&D deposit for first-time custom customers (refunded after $50,000 in annual orders) and an $85/hour graphic design fee if you use our in-house design team. Submit a contact form with your project details and we'll put together a detailed quote.
Process & Lead Times
What is the lead time for a custom product?
Most custom products run 10 to 12 weeks from signed product specs to completion. Before production starts, expect roughly 2 to 3 weeks for quoting and another 2 weeks to finalize specs and supporting documents. Lead times can shift based on ingredient availability, formulation complexity, packaging, and testing protocols, but our turnkey, in-house approach helps protect that timeline by eliminating the multi-vendor handoffs that slow most projects down. Brands that need to move faster can customize the label on one of our on-trend stock formulations, which is the quickest path to shelf.
What testing do you perform on raw materials and finished products?
Quality is built into every stage of our process. Every raw material is tested for identity, potency, and safety on arrival using methods like FT-IR spectroscopy and microbiological testing, and only approved materials are released into inventory. Before full-scale production, we run an R&D batch in our lab to confirm formulation viability, followed by a pilot batch on production equipment. Full production runs include content uniformity, mix uniformity, and disintegration testing. After production, we repeat key tests, including microbiological and heavy metals, and generate a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for your review. We also conduct stability testing, both accelerated aging and ongoing, to confirm shelf life and potency through expiration.
Do you sell internationally?
Yes. Our international division handles export documentation, country-specific compliance, and shipping requirements for brands selling outside the United States. Minimums and processes differ from domestic projects, so submit our contact form and a member of our international team will reach out to discuss the specifics of your market.
Capabilities & Formats
What product formats do you manufacture?
Can we customize one of your stock formulations?
Yes, and many of our partners do exactly that. Our extensive on-trend stock portfolio gives you a fast, proven starting point, and our R&D team can modify any of those formulations to differentiate your private brand, whether that means adjusting active ingredients, dosages, flavor systems, or formats. For brands that need maximum differentiation, our team can also build a fully custom supplement formulation from the ground up. Either path delivers a product you can stand behind; the trade-off is speed-to-market versus the deeper differentiation that comes with custom development.
Do you offer formulation consulting and product development?
Yes. Custom supplement formulation is one of our strongest capabilities, and our R&D team is one of the cornerstones of our success. Our food scientists average 15+ years of experience and are particularly known for crafting flavored products that score high in both internal and external sensory panel taste testing. We work with clinically studied and trademarked ingredients so you can make substantiated structure/function claims, and we partner with leading ingredient suppliers to keep your formulations aligned with current consumer demand. Our team will also tackle the complex formulation challenges other manufacturers won't touch.
Can I send you the raw ingredients to formulate and package?
No, Reliance does not offer tolling. Sourcing raw materials ourselves is how we protect quality, traceability, and supply continuity for every project. Our extensive global vendor network and long-standing supplier relationships give us access to high-potency, bioavailable ingredients, including branded and clinically studied ingredients, at competitive pricing. We use branded ingredients whenever possible because they're typically held to higher quality standards, come with clinical backing, and give your product a meaningful marketing advantage when competing against national brands.
Can I customize packaging beyond labels?
Yes. When you partner with Reliance for supplement contract manufacturing, packaging goes far beyond just labels. As part of our turnkey approach, we offer extensive customization across both product formats and packaging solutions to match your brand vision and market needs.
You can choose from a wide range of packaging options, including bottles, jars/tubs, gusset bags, blister packs, and stick packs, along with multiple dosage formats like powders, capsules, tablets, softgels, and chewables.
Whether you are selecting a stock product for faster speed-to-market or developing a fully custom formulation, our team works with you to create packaging that aligns with your branding, channel strategy, and consumer experience goals. We also provide in-house graphic design and regulatory label review to ensure your packaging is both eye-catching and compliant.
What are your areas of expertise or specialty categories?
Reliance carries a broad on-trend assortment across the entire VMS category, which lets growing and mass-market brands consolidate vendors and build a complete product line under one roof. Our specific areas of specialty are plant-based protein products with exceptional taste and texture, collagen, certified organic and whole food products, probiotic manufacturing, and hydration formulas, including hydration in our in-house stick pack format.
Quality, Compliance & Certifications
What certifications and quality standards does Reliance hold?
Our Edison, NJ facility is registered for UL GMP, NSF GMP, and NSF Gluten-Free, and is also Organic, Vegan, Kosher, and Halal Certified. We have extensive experience with FDA compliance and DSHEA regulations, and our in-house regulatory team can guide you through any product-level certifications your brand needs, including USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Certified Vegan, Kosher, and Halal. See our full certifications list and learn why they matter for your brand.
Can I create my own labels, or does Reliance offer label design?
Both. If you have an existing label or design firm, we'll provide label templates for your designer and run a thorough regulatory review to make sure everything is compliant before printing. If you don't have a design resource, our in-house graphic design team will create eye-catching, customized labels and packaging built to make your brand stand out on shelf. In-house label design is billed at $85/hour, with a first-hour deposit required.
Partnership & Sustainability
What sustainability initiatives does Reliance have in place?
Sustainability is an active part of how we operate. Our environmental initiative includes a shift toward post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic bottles for the majority of our bottled products, and we continue to evaluate packaging and operational improvements that reduce environmental impact without compromising product quality or shelf life. We can also help you explore sustainable packaging options like recyclable and biodegradable materials, low-impact pouches, and right-sized packaging that reduces shipping volume and emissions.
What does it mean to partner with Reliance long-term?
It means working with a supplement manufacturing partner who is invested in your brand's success well beyond any single production run. As a dietary supplement contract manufacturing partner, we support long-term growth through dedicated teams that understand your products, timelines, and category strategy.
Our approach to contract manufacturing is built on consistency, communication, and accountability at every stage of the process. When challenges arise, as they can in any complex supply chain, we work proactively with you to adjust plans, provide visibility, and keep your business moving forward.
As your brand grows, we scale with you by offering the capacity, formulation expertise, and on-trend product pipeline needed to support new launches, line extensions, and new categories.
